LETS GO TO MALIBU

I spent a little time updating the collections on our website. It is a great creative exercise to pretend I am in a location and design a space in my head.  Hmmm yes. Sitting in an airy spot in Malibu staring out at the ocean. Don't need a whole lot of color when nature is your backdrop. Warm tones, plenty of cushy seating, and a kick ass outdoor chair to watch the sunset. That's all a girl needs. 

There is a little cross over between the collections but I really try to capture the vibe of the place and give each collection its own personality. Running throughout is our Lee Upholstery which we can special order in a wide array of fabric and finish choices.

CANVAS INTERIORS: MALIBU COLLECTION

Today we take a little trip to Malibu. Welcome to my imaginary beach house. I'm guessing you may know by now as I talk about California a lot... I lived in LA for 10 years, SF for 10 years. I no doubt have an active fantasy of heading back up (or down depending on which decade we're talking about) PCH with my kids and Mr. K happily pulling in to our summer rental: a Malibu beach house.  

Again, this is pure fantasy but one can dream right? Picture endless windows, expanse of blue ocean greeting you from the front door. Lots of white mixed with earth tones and laid back luxury. Inspiration for Canvas Interiors comes from my 20 years living in California, having escaped cold winters in Toronto. Light, airy, breezy and casual is how I roll.

Indoor/outdoor living, large coffee tables for books, drinks and sandy feet.  Natural fibers, light wood and giant sink-in sofas all make for the perfect scenario.

INSPIRE // DESIRE: CANVAS INTERIORS BEACH COZY

Popping in today with an image from the store as we cozy things up with layers. This setting is one of my favorites. It is light and airy (cue the clouds) while still feeling beachy (chandelier and lamp).  Add the cozy layers (pillows and throws) and you have instant beach cozy. This is the first Inspire // Desire I have done with the store. Hope you enjoy!

Malibu, just for fun

It all started with Architectural Digest. I was thumbing through the mag and saw some real estate listings in Malibu. So I went to the web waves and started looking at Malibu real estate just for kicks. A Frank Gehry designed oceanfront home for $57.5 million? No problem.  

I looked at a few more listings just for fun. Then I decided to decorate my own (little) Malibu beach house using of course, Canvas Interiors goodies. I do this exercise from time to time to make sure we have a good mix of vibes in the product edit. We start with the base of a 'simple canvas' (the Dahlia and Baja for example) and build a specific look around that.  

So here you have my morning exercise:

Dahlia sofa // Aqua cabinet // Avery coffee table // Baja chair (outdoor fabric!)

driftwood sconce //Terra side table // Olympia lamp // Luna hurricane

Add a big jute rug, some throw pillows and put your sandy feet up.

Hello and happy start to 2013!

Today its off to Malibu where we go to the home of Avi Arad as seen in AD.  

When I read about his path to Malibu and the journey that brought his family to the beach, I can totally appreciate the calm that is this home.  It struck me as the perfect retreat from special effects and  comic book heros.

I had a dream last night that I was in an elevator in LA and someone offered me a job at an ad agency.  I have had LA on the brain lately and I'm not sure why.  Having lived there for 10 years working in advertising the dream wasn't too far fetched.  And I do have a soft spot for LA.  The sun, the quality of light, the vibe, the art and laid back lifestyle is a plus.  The rest of it you work around like the traffic and Real Housewives crowd.

This morning with my coffee I clicked through the new issue of Lonny magazine and this Malibu house is the standout for me. Beautiful light, eclectic interiors all based on a palette of white is just right in my book.  Patrick Cline captures the essence of this retreat in these light filled images.

Someone asked me once while standing in canvas, "Catherine are you really this beige?"  and the answer is yes!  In fact, my answer was "give me a house on the beach in Malibu with a white interior and I'd be a happy girl".
