c. 1910 meets the Camutos

Vince Camuto and his wife Louise have restored this Long Island treasure to an elegant modern-day home.  It is  light, airy and fresh.  Tastefully done, not over the top, summer freshness mixed with classic tones, they seem to have done this old beauty justice. Grand, huge and beautiful - I love looking at these places for the sheer history of it all. Fancy parties, elegant dinners...I wish I had a time machine to attend a party here circa 1920.

You can read much more about the history and renovation of the house in the AD article here.  These kinds of stories capture my imagination and admiration. When looking at the house in 2005 the Camutos were greeted with a gaping water damaged hole in the roof, an aged and sad warren of rooms that had been used as a dormitory... and still they saw the beauty.  Yes its massive, yes it is out of most of our wildest imaginations to afford such a thing. And yes, we can appreciate the idea and the aesthetic. Sunny, light, white, sisal, slipcovers. Ideal in my eyes whether a mansion or a beach bungalow.

A preservation, a restoration and above all beautiful sentiment
that what is old is a treasure.

Spanish perfection

Hello and welcome to Monday. Today we are headed to Spain thanks to the lovely blog, Sea of Girasoles.  I followed a pin to the blog to the magazine micasa, and thought I would share this home with you. It is such a peaceful looking spot.

Simple, well curated and breezy.
It has inspired me to take a look around chez k and repurpose / restyle a few things.
I love when that happens.

canvas interiors: summer sale

We have a sale starting tomorrow at Canvas Interiors both online and in store. If you are new to canvasstyle,  Canvas Interiors is a furniture store and website Mr. K and I cooked up and collaborate on.  Every now and then I blog about it here, so today I thought I would mention the sale.

We describe the vibe as Malibu meets Montauk somewhere in a Belgian villa. A little of this, a little of that, all tied together with clean lines and a lot of white. Check out the 'shop your style' section on the website to see a few curated styles.

If you have any questions you can contact the store via email at hello@canvasinteriors.com
or call Joanne or Matt at 321-397-9895 and they would be happy to chat with you!

summer camp 2013, 80's style

I've been talking to a lot of friends lately who are driving their kids to summer camp. It made me want to get in the car and head north.  I was lucky enough to spend a few summers here:

North of Toronto, in Algonquin Park at the amazing Taylor Statten Camps... I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a wholesome, adventurous summer for their kids. I just showed Small K the pictures and hope that he is interested in trying such an adventure someday. I paddle a mean canoe and would someday love to return to September Camp with our kids.

Today I will pack an imaginary duffle bag for camp...so much nostalgia when looking at these images it has me running for the Tretorns. And I'm going really old school with the Vuarnets.

C&C plaid shirt: here / rag & bone boyfriend short / Duck shoes: here

jcrew sweater: here / Sperry boat shoe: here / Roots sweat pants: here

Monrow long sleeve t: here /  Tretorns: here / Vuarnet sunglasses: here

And for a real dose of summer, learn how to barrel lace those Sperrys!

hostess gifts: canvas interiors style

Hello and I hope you had a great weekend. We enjoyed a visit with friends on Saturday and a very lazy Fathers Day chez K. Steak, scotch and swimming. A good day for Mr. K.

Lately I've been thinking about all the little things we have in the store. We tend to focus on the big stuff but I realized this weekend we have a lovely assortment of goodies that would qualify as 'hostess gifts'.

Whether around the corner for a bbq or a longer journey for a weekend stay, it is always nice to arrive with a little something for your host. With lots of invitations stacking up on your calendar it is also nice to find unique things for under $100.

Here is a quick shopping list from Canvas Interiors.
All of these gifts are under $100. Some of them under $50.

Have a few on hand wrapped and ready to go at a moment's notice.

You can visit our website here
or use these quick links to get you where you want to go.

We wish you a happy summer of travel and good times with friends.

Canvas Interiors: we have a dark side

Popping in to share a some images that have got us thinking about Father's Day at Canvas Interiors...

While we show a lot of white light and beachy, we also have a part of the store we affectionately call 'Manvas'.  This is where we play with the more masculine side of the brand.

Darker colors, cozy man-den stuff.  Card games and whiskey kind of vibe.

Gray and cozy

Reclaimed wood and metal

a little rusty and imperfect

rust and leather

petrified wood

reclaimed wood

zinc and nautical

What better time of year to show you a bit of  'Manvas' than Father's Day.
I do hope you have enjoyed seeing Canvas Interiors' other personality.

where you will also find a link to our catalog.

high/low

I know I have been posting lately about new things arriving in my closet but to paint a true picture I should also share the 'finds'.  I am a high/low shopper. I just found the most perfect summer pant at Old Navy. Throw them on with an LA Made tank top (my favorites) and my Stuart Weitzman 'McChain' (sadly sold out and believe me I have been searching for more) sandals and I am a happy camper.  Stuart and Old Navy living together seamlessly.

Add to that an H & M hat and some gorgeous jewelry from my talented friends at loot and I feel like a million bucks in my $29 pants, $10 hat and $42 tank.  I'll leave the shoes out of the math as they are clearly the 'splurge' but I've been wearing them non stop for two summers so I think I am getting my money's worth as they head in to summer #3.

Mr K stacked my hats like this yesterday with a chuckle.  He thinks I am slightly crazy.

These are the gorgeous 'loot' jewelry necklaces I have been reaching for daily.

The Old Navy pants are my 'slightly obsessed' item of the week.
Much less expensive than most others probably because they are a linen 'blend'
but they are extremely comfortable and fit perfectly.

The rest:

happy Monday and happy shopping!

shout out: sfgirlbybay Victoria Smith

So proud of friend Victoria Smith of sfgirlbybay. If you haven't discovered her blog you should take a minute to visit.  It is a treat to read.

She is so incredibly talented and humble and sweet. Check out her excitement when people from Martha Stewart got in touch with her. The project: to share some of her favorite bohemian Martha momentsCongrats Victoria! Next stop - TV show. I keep saying this to her. If someone is reading this who happens to produce for say, HGTV or some such fun network... this girl needs to be in front of the camera. She has amazing ideas and innate fabulousness.

isn't she a doll?

Victoria is also guest pinning for Martha Stewart ... how exciting!
Check out her pins here and follow along as she adds pins.

Victoria is a gem, I am excited for her and happy to share her accomplishments with you.

You can see more at canvasinteriors.com
we have added quite a few new things to the website so check it out if you haven't been for a while.

slightly obsessed: lemlem

Today I bring you lemlem, Liya Kebede's labor of love. I have had my eye on lemlem over the years and admired the story behind it. Hand woven treasures, these pieces have brought much needed economic independence to the traditional weavers in her native country of Ethiopia.  Liya discovered they were losing their jobs due to a decline in local demand for their goods and she wanted to do something about it.

lemlem means 'to bloom' in Amharic.

With the launch of her children's line in 2007,
Liya has bloomed from children's clothing to a women's line and a partnership with J.Crew.

One new thing has made it to my closet and prompted this post...

I was smitten the minute I opened the box.
and the best news... this one currently on sale at shopbop!

and I collected a few more pieces for you to look at below.
