totally random: stripes

The Breton Stripe - we all know the story of the French sailors and Coco Chanel.

Today the look holds a classic yet hip place in fashion history. For me, it is the combo of playful and chic that works.  If I am in a hurry, I put a little Breton stripe on with my Aviators and ballet flats and feel immediately at ease. Dress it up with a skirt, stay casual with the boyfriend roll-ups, or a tad edgy with a black skinny pant and some kitten heels.

I love the way these ladies rock the stripes. Some girly, some tom boy, some classic.

These two girls are impossibly cute.  If you are reading this Marcy R. U., the girl on the left is your twin and I could totally see you in this outfit.

love the boots

love the thrown together feel of this

....  and of course Kate can do no wrong

Someday soon I will do a Breton Stripe shopping list and post that.

Today however its walking walking walking at the Las Vegas World Market Center looking for new goodies for canvas with Mr. K.  An update on this adventure coming soon.

in residence

I've seen a few of these images floating around the web waves, and have pinned a couple of them.  I wanted to see the story behind them so here it is from Residence magazine.

The flat is in Malmo, Sweden.  It is a great example of old and new living together beautifully.  For example the big gold mirror and the Eames chair at the desk are both finds from the famous Paris flea market, Clignancourt.  The desk and clothing rack you see in those images are from Ikea.

A bonus for the homeowner was the built-in art she discovered under the particle board '70's ceilings.  The architectural detail was a treasure uncovered when they removed the drop ceilings.

The home was built ages ago, the flea market finds add character, and the practical and simple finds from Ikea work seamlessly together.

icing

I thought I was done posting about the store this week.  I'm feeling like it is time to sit back, reflect and gear up for the party tomorrow night.  However...  I went to the store yesterday and saw the new art that had just been hung - here are a few images.  Couldn't resist...

I love the reflection in the table in the foreground

a horse staring at you when you wake up... hmmm...

black and white in the 'hollywood' bedroom

make a wish with the giant dandelion

my personal favorite, dreamy clouds above your bed (excuse shell chandelier reflection)

I have quite a few new non-store posts in the hopper waiting to see the light of day and that will be my focus next week. Onward and blogward!

sunday at canvas (opening week!)

Well folks, this is it.  Opening week!

You've seen the progress from this:

to this...

a lot of hard work and white paint later...

Thank you for checking out the 'sunday at canvas' series.   It started as a way for us to chronicle the journey from an empty space to a concept realized.  And may I say that your enthusiasm and encouragement has been invaluable. You know who you are dear friends. You mean the world to us and your collective excitement means more than you know.

I will post random store updates from time to time as new things arrive.  As always, you can check out the canvas interiors facebook page for regular updates on product goodies, events and goings on.

The blog will evolve, the store will evolve and the two will cross paths here and there.  As soon as the canvas interiors e.commerce website is up and running I will link to it from the blog so your beach chic fix (say that 3 times fast)  is just a click away.

Next step:  Launch Party this week!
I will post some images after the party and then take a big long nap.

up at the lake

The rustic simplicity of this lake house appeals to me.  Its not 'rustic' in a deer-antler plaid-blanket kind of way, but in a 'we trucked what we could up here in a U-Haul and it works' kind of way.

Imagine a cold beer on a hot day on the dock.  Or the wind in your hair in that pretty little boat. Better still, a cold beer in the boat with the wind in your hair...

The interior looks simple and welcoming.  Show up, put on your cozy clothes and put your feet up. Grill your dinner, open some wine and eat al fresco. No fuss, no fancy no problem.

totally random (short story)

I read an article in Town & Country entitled "Boy meets Girl".  It is about the resurrection of the label Carven, founded in 1945 by Madame Carven Mallet.   She was the first to make petites, and the first to make evening dresses of simple cotton.  I like the spirit of Madame Carven.

The article made me want to dig for images of shorts.  It must have been the image of Alexa Chung at a Carven trunk show sporting shorts and a blazer that did it.  Here is another one of her at a Carven show (and btw note the black dress on the right in the background - love).

So I went on a shorts search and found images that reminded me that no matter what the occasion, if you stay true to your style and it truly reflects who you are - you will stand out to those who get it. Be comfortable. Be confident. Be unique by simply being you.

Which one are you?
Elegant silk?  Casual denim?  Lacey sweet?  Converse casual?  Heels? Oxfords? Boots?
I do think I might be a bit of all of them.  Again, the Gemini in me.

sunday at canvas

We unpacked more treasures Friday, and by Sunday the floor started to feel really cozy. I know that word is kind of 'charming', but it describes what happens when you add a bit of patina to the white simplicity of the furniture. We already had the sparkle on the floor with the mercury glass, silver and gold accessories, but this new layer adds a bit of caramel creamy warmth to the place.

And the ever-so handy Mr. K wrapped our logo letters in canvas and hung the store signage on his handmade wall... big reveal at the end...  it looks great!

image disclaimer again... crazy lighting sorry!

round dining table with just the right amount of patina
and that giant mirror is amazing

these are very tall - great statement pieces on a buffet or mantel

you have to see and feel this one in person... caramel, tufted and gorgeous

the table has a great tone to it, the big bowl adds texture

we call this the 'Hollywood' bedroom and it evolves daily...
i like the warmth of the wood with the cool black & white

and...

TA DA!

This week we await throw pillows, candles, coffee table books and artwork.  These are the final touches that will add yet another layer to our canvas.    It is hard to believe we are almost ready.  It is an exciting time!  Behind the scenes the website is being worked on and will be up and running with an ecommerce site in a few weeks.

The doors are 'softly' open if you live in the area and want to take a peek.
Official launch day is January 26th!

its a wunder

Somewhere in my quest for images of white interiors I stumbled upon this image from lookslikewhite:

I then started digging around the web-waves in a slightly obsessed fashion.  I found the interior designer is Jayne Wunder and I absolutely have a design crush.  Her design is serene, warm and substantial.  It is such a fantastic combination of soft and strong. Clean lines and cozy.  Refined and relaxed.

Here are more images from Villa Orpheus on Mykonos:

I tracked down the rest of the images on Vartnya hem. It is a lovely story of a couple falling in love with a vacation destination, getting married there, and then continuing their love affair by buying the property next door to the chapel where they got married. They bought the chapel too!  Great story, great vibe.

And if you are ready to book your holiday in this dreamy villa, here is the link to the rental info:

I am finding with extra time at home I am becoming more of a shopping sleuth. I have shopped on Amazon forever, but never really for 'fa...
