lookbook: SF

I am headed to San Francisco in a few weeks to visit my westies (besties in the west) and am inspired by these images. When I lived there I had pretty much a black head to toe wardrobe. I arrived in FLA with a small handful of summer clothes (if you have been to SF in the summer you will know you don't need a whole lot of tank tops). I think this trip I am going to mix it up and ditch the noir uniform. All this FLA sunshine has gone to my head.

It will be a challenge but I know I can do it.  Just look at these images all together. I was going to post them one by one but really, they say so much when edited together for an overall feeling.  I am going to dive into my closet and rethink how I put pieces together (like that sweater over the floaty sea foam top below) and come out with a whole new perspective.

Cream, sea foam, grey with a dash of navy.
And of course I may have to do a
teeny tiny bit of shopping while I'm there
to complet the look.
Right?

Dear Lisa: can I come over?

While finally catching up on my Lonny mag fix (Mr. XS otherwise known as youngest child went back to preschool today!)  I saw this.  The beach getaway of a girl named Lisa.  And I wanted Lisa to be my friend so I could drink wine with her right here:

This is my kind of beach house.  The tone on tone creamy palette is so inviting and casual. And the sink-in-and stay awhile message is loud and clear when you add the fur pillows, fuzzy hide and cozy throw. The sea grass, jute and light wood makes the room glow with a sandy warmth.

One of the first homes built on Bald Head Island in the early 70's, this gem was ready for a renovation.  Starting with white paint, Lisa's reno plan is thoughtful and stikes a perfect beach house balance. I often talk in terms of 'beachy yet not too kitchy".  I have been known to use the words "sophisticated yet not too precious".  I like the word 'yet' when describing a look. It connotes that a look is not one-note, not straight out of a textbook.  If you read the Lonny article, this is exactly how she describes her goals for the renovation. Her signature is 'casual luxe' and it totally resonates with me.

My favorite interiors are ones that show both balance and tension.  Balance of scale, tone and texture.  Tension between fancy and flea market, rustic and sleek.  This place has it down.

As each page unfolds I think "yes, yes that's perfect!".  I love her taste, but more importantly her style. It takes a certain something to put a look together that is eclectic yet seamless (see more of Lisa Sherry's work here).  And as always, Patrick Cline does a superb job of capturing the essence of the home in his images.

These images are going on my old-school bulletin board.
This home is too inspiring to live only in virtual land.
Must get more printer ink stat.

inspire // desire : grey

Today's inspire // desire is all about grey.  Jeans that is.  I love the soft look of these jeans and am ready to try a few variations... a little sheen, perhaps some faux leather?  Pair with a navy top, breton stripe or white T and you have a simple go-to look.

lighten up

I've been shooting a lot of images of our lights lately so today I will share with you a little of this, a little of that from the lighting collection at canvas interiors.  We have put together a collection of table lamps, pendants and chandeliers that feel artful and interesting. Everything from crystals to iron.  If you start with a simple canvas, you can create any vibe you wish.

Take a peek:

dangling crystals encased in contemporary silver - love this juxtaposition

simple shape, interesting texture - see below

like a tulip...

our fan fav - we love it too.

going green

I have noticed another color that keeps catching my attention for fall.  It is soft green military inspired.  Normally I don't go for the whole 'combat' look but there is something about these new shapes and muted color that I am liking.  The shirt is soft and drapey worn open or tucked in. The pants are not too tight, not too baggy.  The jacket works with every single bottom you could imagine.

coming clean

This post is totally self-serving.  I am trying to convince Mr. K. that we need to do a 'slight refresh' of our laundry and mud room.  It currently functions as the center of chaos in our home. As in, complete disaster area. The laundry room is tucked under the stairs, the home office has some space constraints and sits in the mud room.  Add 6 and 4 year olds to the mix and its a freak show of shoes, bills, towels, bags and wait... more shoes.

To top it off, the countertops are black.  As you may have figured out by now, white would be my preference.  So in an effort to gather enough visual stimulation to convince him to do this, I am posting a few images here.

Doesn't that look nice?

ps: 'like' me on facebook to support the 'refresh the laundry room' idea!
I need all your votes!
(now isn't that more fun than politics?)

totally random: on pinning

I have a confession - I have been avidly pinning for some time now.  But I have to say, the last few weeks I have kind of burnt out. Don't get me wrong, I love spending long caffinated tangents getting happily lost in image-land. But I'm starting to see the same pins over and over again.  And I feel like the charm has sort of worn off - just a bit.  But then, something happened...

I would like to thank the following pinners for having such wonderful pins it jolted me out of my pinning funk.

Em C

zoe @ oceana island living

I got that feeling again. That excited breathy feeling when you first find a few people on pinterest that share your aesthetic and you can't click through their pins fast enough.  I know, sad right?  But seriously, these two pinners got me excited, re-energized and best of all, happy.

Thank you Em C and Zoe!
Check out their pins and have a happy pinning day.
